They call it the 'seat of Gods', the 'land of Shiva'. Tungnath is the world's highest Shiva shrine. At a thousand years, it is also one of the oldest Shiva temples. Among the 'Panch Kedar', or the five temples located in the mountain range of Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand, Tungnath is the highest. From the base camp of Chopta village, a trek of 3.5 km leads to the exotic shrine.
The pleasant weather in summers and snow-covered peaks during winters ensure a bewitching and enchanting view while you trek towards the temple.
To start the Tungnath trek, one needs to reach the initiation point which is Chopta village. It is accessible and can be reached from the nearest airport in Dehradun or the closest railway station in Hrishikesh by road in about 5 to 6 hours.
Want more? Well, there is a bonus for those who trek till the Tungnath. 1.5 km ahead of Tungnath is Chandrashila, an equally exotic and mesmerizing spot. Situated at 4000 meters above sea level it is nothing less than a reward for trek lovers. People can enjoy their visit to Chandrashila round the year, but during heavy rainfall, it is quite inaccessible. Age is not a problem to go there. All motor able roads make the trip much more fun and it is exciting as it goes through Kedarnath Wildlife sanctuary. Trekking in Tungnath is full of enthusiasm and it is really a lifetime experience for the visitors.
