Static caravans might seem a little strange to people who don't know what they actually are. Well let me enlighten you. It's basically a caravan that is static - in other words it doesn't move around. Well, that's not entirely true. They move around, but once you place them in a location they stay there. What's the point of that you might ask. There are a number of reasons.
Often they will be used not as temporary accommodation for short trips, but as actual residential housing. They've got a lot more amenities, due to their size and structural complexity, and so lend themselves well to this sort of use. They are known as mobile homes in the U.S. So if you're looking buy and see 'static caravan for sale' that's what you should look out for, as an ad for a mobile home will likely be from the states. They are also used in the UK as temporary classrooms during lengthy renovations.
So static caravans are similar to the regular kind and they come from the same sort of origin - but the size and the amenities or furnishings contained therein, as well their relatively fixed positioning, are the main differences. They also aren't actually towed as a touring caravan might be; they're more commonly transported on flatbed vehicles over long distances and then assembled and moved into position with a tractor or another powerful vehicle such as a 4x4.
Although they can be used as permanent residences, and are available with central heating and double glazing for use in the winter, they are more often used for leisure purposes in the summer months. Static caravans usually feature a few dedicated bedrooms, but also have the addition of convertible seating in the living areas so as to sleep additional people.
So if there's a static caravan for sale, and you want to buy, there are a few things to look out for. Firstly, think whether it's new or second hand. New models are great but they are a lot pricier and will only depreciate in value so second hand is a good bet if it 's your first purchase or you're not sure how much it will be used. General amenities are another thing you should keep an eye out for. Digital television aerials are essential for viewing T.V after the switchover from the old analogue system so that's a plus. You don't want to buy your static caravan and find that the aerial needs to be upgraded. If you want to use it in the winter, double glazing and central heating is a must. Apart from that, things like fridges, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are a nice inclusion. Also, some companies dealing in second hand static caravans will offer free transportation to where you want it. That's a real bonus.
Well hopefully you've got some idea about the differences between the static and touring caravans by now, and what they have to offer. And maybe you'll have a few things to look out for if you ever want to rent or buy. In any case, I'm sure they now seem a little less strange.
