Camping experiences as a child can evoke many happy memories as an adult. Remembering those days as a kid, running around from sun-up to sun-down, getting filthy and going wild was all part of the fun. When children grow up and become adults, many want to re-create the experience for their own kids. However, seeing it from an adult's point of view, it quickly becomes clear that there is a great deal of preparation that goes into enjoying those carefree days.
Preparation is key when planning any kind of camping trip, but it is even more important when kids are involved. The best solution is to make a comprehensive list of all the camping equipment you will need. Remember to pack essentials such as tents and sleeping bags, as well as a portable stove, cool-box, bedding and kitchenware.
Even if you plan to travel during summer, camping in New Zealand can still be cold at night. Pack extra layers for the kids, and invest in waterproof clothing and camping equipment suitable for the climate. Another side-effect of getting close to nature, means nature will get close to you, so don't forget to bring insect repellant and plenty of sunscreen.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of camping is mealtime. Kids love being able to cook and eat outdoors, especially if it means being allowed treats. Toasting marshmallows is a family favourite, and if your kids enjoy fishing, they will love being able to cook and eat what they catch. It's best to pack a range of easy-to-prepare foods when camping, as different campsites will have varying supplies and equipment available.
Come prepared with as many activities as possible. For younger kids, bring arts and crafts supplies that can be used with collected outdoor materials such as leaves, branches, shells and feathers. Sports will also keep them busy, so pack tennis rackets, footballs, Frisbees, fishing rods, and bikes. For rainy weather, board games and packs of cards will help to pass the time.
Camping in New Zealand is incredibly popular, and with so many beautiful places to visit, it is difficult to choose where to go. Some campers like to plan their route months ahead of schedule, while others prefer to wing it. Some great spots to try when camping with kids include areas within Abel Tasman National Park, for a wide range of outdoor activities, or close to Queenstown for adventure-seeking. Another favourite is the back-to-basics adventure camp for kids, Quinney's Bush in Nelson, with go-karts, flying foxes, BMX track, Skate Park, and waterslide.
Camping with children doesn't need to be hard work. Plan ahead, pack suitable camping equipment, bring activities to keep them busy, and don't forget your sleeping bags. In twenty years' time, it will be your kids who are looking back on their fond memories of camping, and planning camp trips with families of their own.
