Aswan, Egypt
October 6th
Hello from Aswan Egypt.
Yeah yeah, I know, what am I doing hundreds of miles south of Cairo? Well, on Friday we decided to come down here to get a falucca to Luxor. Faluccas are those cool Egyptian sail boats you see in all the old movies and stuff. Nate really liked the idea, besides we both need a break from all the hustle and bustle of the city.
Friday I bought a ticket (so did the four girls and the Tasmanian guy) and spent the day going through some more bazaars and checking out the Citidel (cool stuff by the way). We managed to get to the top of the Hilton to see the sun set over Cairo and suck down my first Egyptian beer (more good stuff, tastes like Corona). The train ride was 12 hours ‘inshala’ (god willing). The ride went well and 14 hours later we made it to Aswan.
What a cool little town Aswan is. We had some problems with a tour guide trying to sell us a very expensive trip but we managed to get a really cool deal on a nice hotel. We paid 7.50 Egyptian ($1.50) for a three star hotel. After a shower and some lunch we decided to go swimming. We found a nice little hotel and for 10 ($2.20) we could use their pool!
That was about it for the day. Relaxing has been top priority for us. The girls are going to Abu Simbul at 4am tomorrow and both Lyndon and I decided to opt out. The idea of leaving at 4am and coming back at noon to spend a couple of hours at a temple just didn’t sound good.
On a lighter note, I think Nate has fallen in love. Penny (NZ) has got a little girl kitty cat (stuffed animal) called Poobell that she travels with and Nate can’t stop talking about her. I wonder if there is going to be any romance in the air!! Who knows, we do have a three day boat ride ahead of us!
