Kym Johnson loves to explore, whether it’s budget or bespoke.
WHAT WAS YOUR BEST HOLIDAY?
In 2003 I landed a job in Monaco working on a dance stage show for two months and got quite a bit of free time to explore. I’d hop on the TGV, travel along the stunning coastline and get off in small towns like Villefranche, Antibes and St Tropez. I was young and on a strict budget but my boyfriend at the time and I went out on a paddle boat with a bottle of champagne and had the best time. I think we were having more fun than the people on the yachts around us!
AND THE BEST HOTEL YOU’VE STAYED IN?
My stay at the Plaza in New York in 2006 was perfection. You’re steps away from the fabulous shopping along Fifth Avenue, across the road from exploring Central Park and in one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.
WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS TAKE WITH YOU?
Planes can get so cold so I always take a wrap to snuggle into or use as a scarf to keep me warm and comfortable.
YOUR BEST PIECE OF TRAVEL ADVICE?
Never, ever forget your passport. I learnt from experience once on my way to London, I ended up missing the plane and had to wait until the next day to catch a flight.
WHAT WAS YOUR WORST EXPERIENCE ON HOLIDAY?
Having my handbag stolen in Trafalgar Square in London. It had everything in it and I was in complete shock. A terrible end to my holiday.
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO TO NEXT?
I’d love to go on safari in Africa. Lewa Safari Camp on Lewa Conservancy in Kenya looks amazing. It’s a 12-tent classic safari camp with thatched roofs, verandahs and en suite bathrooms for each tent. In the middle is a central dining and lounge area where there’s always a roaring log fire. A swimming pool overlooks the rolling plains.
