Towards the end of the Town Bazaar you can find the Imperial Stores, a true Mahabaleshwar shopping institution. Established during the British occupancy, it’s been run by the same Irani family for decades. Known for having once been the primary go-to for the Raj, the shop caters to all the basic needs of the locals and visiting tourists. You can purchase pretty much everything from food and alcohol to movies and medicines. While you might not find that special souvenir that’s waiting amongst the charming clutter of the Bazaar, you’ll be able to pick your groceries in a subtly historic environment.
Mapro Gardens
A vibrant park and produce centre on the road between Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani, Mapro Garden is perfect for sampling and purchasing the best of the local strawberries, gooseberries, and raspberries. As well catching a first-hand glimpse of the manufacturing process, you can fill your bags with exquisite jams, jellies, marmalades, squashes, preserves, and other delicacies well worth taking home with you. After touring the site, kicking back with a quick refreshment or two is a treat and there’s plenty to choose from, whether you fancy a milkshake, fruit salad, or a cooling ice-cream. While you’re there, you might as well check out the on-site chocolate factory.
Panchgani
Little more than a breath-taking 25-minute drive away from Mahabaleshwar, along the same road that gets you to Mapro Garden, is Panchgani, another picturesque hill station graced with beautiful views and an enticing rural culture. Known for a gentle way of life and a peppering of well-regarded boarding schools, Panchgani is also a great place to pick up some quirky gifts and mementos. The Shivaji Circle is ideal for shoppers wanting leather products, bags, and crafts of all shapes and sizes, while the Buddha-Ka-Bazaar, which is traditionally held every Wednesday, is good for jams, sweets, jellies, and honeys. If you fancy a snack, there are plenty of tasty bakeries scattered about.
