A fizzing multicultural centre, New Delhi is home to a splendid mishmash of culinary traditions and techniques, from the finest northern Indian fare to the tastiest of world cuisine. To explore the rustic heart and soul of Delhi grub, Chandni Chowk and the surrounding streets in the old town are perfect for a sweet and spicy morsel. You’ll want to try out Karim’s, a popular meat-grilling hideaway that’s been serving the locals for more than a century. For an up-and-coming vibe in a cool setting, Hauz Khas Village is also worth checking out.
Where to shop
With a proud history of trading, New Delhi offers some of the best shopping anywhere in India. Rich in variety and rife with charming originality, the options for a day’s spending are endless. At Sarojini Nagar Market you’ll find a shedload of designer brands at bargain prices. A hotspot for cancelled and surplus lines, it’s become a favourite with those looking for a cheap and trendy wardrobe – but remember to scan the products for faults. Connaught Place is tiptop for an international experience, while the boutiques at Khan Market have been satisfying Delhi’s elite and expat communities for years.
Where to stay
A city of intimidating size, it can be difficult to know where to set up camp in New Delhi. For a central location with plenty of space and premium comfort, Connaught Place is a good choice. Boasting some of the most luxurious hotels in town, it’s a great spot from which to explore – and then retreat from – the chaos. To get right in among things, Paharganj is known as the traveller’s ghetto. It’s rough and ready and stuffed with affordable places to stay, but you can of course find a few plusher options scattered about.
Travel tips
When visiting New Delhi’s famous markets, bagging yourself a few bargain souvenirs, you’re going to want to haggle to get the best price – and avoid being scammed – so be prepared to make your voice heard. As a seriously large city with a massive population, petty crime – particularly theft – does occur, so avoid brandishing lavish goods and try not to carry large amounts of cash around with you. Women should be careful to dress conservatively in order to avoid any unwanted attention.
