Quite recently, the main airports for entry into India were New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai (Madras). However, a number of other ports have now been converted into international entry points such as Trivandrum, Cochin, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Goa and there are more to come. Hence, it is best to check the most convenient port of entry with your travel agent which will suit your specific program. Within the country, you could travel by air, train or road.
Air
Traveling by air around the country is convenient and comfortable. Domestic air services are operated by the government corporation – Indian Airlines, and a number of other private airline companies.
Rail
India has the largest rail network in Asia and second largest in the world. Again a government corporation, the Indian railways offer visitors an opportunity to view the exciting diversity of India through varied landscapes, cultures and histories.
The superfast Shatabadi Express train services link major cities offering quick and comfortable journey. Two of the magnificent luxury trains – Palace on Wheels and The Royal Orient – give visitors a unique travel experience with fine accommodation, specialty restaurants, bars and all modern conveniences. They take you through the historic cities of Rajasthan and Gujrat.
Road
A large network of national and state highways makes road transport the main means of travel after the railways. A wide range of standard and deluxe, air-conditioned and non air-conditioned, chauffeur-driven cars and coaches are available in India. Although self-driven cars are also available on rental, they are not recommended principally because of traffic conditions.
