Taking Bali to the World - Bringing back the Prize
Michael Doliveck, photography professor and tour guide on Bali, won the 2013 Travel Photographer of the Year from the New York Travel Writers Society. His representations of local cultures and stunning scenery have engendoured worldwide interest.
Professor Doliveck of Ketewel, Bali, has been selected as the 2013 Travel Photographer of The Year by the New York Travel Writers Society, because he has captured wonderful scenes, Balinese religious ceremonies and local culture of his subjects.Over many years, his tourism photography has been gaining growing acknowledgement from travellers and photographers. This newest award by the NYTWS validates Professor Doliveck’s status as a doyen of travel photographers around the world.
The New York Travel Writers Society is an organization comprised of over 850 international media experts in the travel industry. These professionals range from travel bloggers, photographers, journalists, writers and editors to broadcasters. The citation shows the latest recognition and increasing popularity among travel bloggers, writers and photographers for Professor Doliveck’s distinctive work.
“They appreciate the rich imagery and way he’s been capturing the soul and character of the Balinese people,” said Dino Maiolo, co-contributor to the Floating Leaf Eco Retreat Blog where many of Doliveck’s images are posted. “His photos show the down-to-earth daily life of the fascinating society and colourful rituals and traditions of the Balinese people.”

Professor Doliveck has travelled and photographed in more than 60 countries, and has deep respect for his favourite subject, the people and island of Bali. Through years of study, travel and personal relationships with the generous Balinese people, Michael has created a body of work that attempts to explain the often-misinterpreted rituals and customs unique to this small island. His respect and appreciation is clearly portrayed in his work. One of his great joys is sharing his knowledge of this unique culture with friends and acquaintances. His photos are now brilliantly captured through the lens of Michael’s Canon 7D and beautifully displayed on the Floating Leaf Eco-Retreat blog.
Professor Doliveck fell in love with Bali over twenty years ago. He and his wife Putu now provide travellers and photographers with deep cultural introduction to this magnificent archipelago of Indonesia. His training in art and photography, along with his intimate bond with the Balinese culture, has provided an ideal foundation for his alluring imagery. Guests not only experience the profound Balinese culture, but also get first hand instruction by an award winning photography and art professor. His wife Putu is of royal Balinese decent and adds to the experiences by providing guests with privileged access to some of Bali’s ancient secrets and treasures.
2013 marks a momentous year for Michael and the Floating Leaf family. Earlier in the year his blog was selected in “The Top 100 Travel Blogs to Follow in 2013”. This, combined with the anticipated opening of Floating Leaf Eco-Retreat this coming December, and the arrival of a baby boy, has made for a memorable year.
Their building project, Floating Leaf Eco-Retreat, adds to their success by offering well-appointed eco-luxury accommodation for their guests.
