The current Myanmar unrest has been in the Indonesian news, (newspapers, TV and internet) with news of current unrest being reported daily.
During the Suharto era it would not of been possible to publish articles that were critical of the government or other friendly governments. Indeed, it is still a crime to insult the President or VP. The interesting thing is that with Indonesia’s horrible human rights record, commentators are reporting the developing situation in Myanmar.
Yesterday I chatted with a well travel Bali expat who has visited Myanmar. He said “The people are so nice, so gracious and polite is amazing they live under this bunch of assholes.” I think that sums it up. In many parts of the world good natured people have to suffer the insecurities of little men with big guns.
