Pura Penataran Agung is the main temple in the Besakih complex. For people who intend visiting the temple here is a map detailing the individual shrines and points of interest. Pura Penataran Agung is unique in many ways, not least in that it is split into 6 separate levels, so bring comfortable shoes.
Pura Penataran Agung has one structure called the Padmatiga (#22 on map) which is the Triple Lotus Throne, dedicated to the supreme deity, Sanghyang Widi Wasa, and the 3 manifestations (Brahma, Wisnu, Siwa). Most temples in Bali has a Padmasana (Lotus Throne located in the NE corner (Balinese geography not withstanding), which is an empty stone throne perched on top of a tower, which itself sits on a Bedawang (cosmic turtle). Don’t tell me psychedelic plants never played a part in Balinese mythology!
If you plan on visiting Pura Penataran Agung and the rest of Besakih temple, here are few tips.
