Sunday evening in Bali and here is what this expat did today. Ika wants to learn to drive a car, so I spent an hour trying to locate a cheap rental, that we could take down to Serangan Island (plenty of open space) and get her started. Seminyak car rental places were all sold out, due to healthy tourist numbers and the fact it was Sunday. One guy wanted 150,000rp for a Suzuki Katana!
The driving lessons didn’t happen but we did make to it Ubud for that cool little local warung next to the Pertamina station in Nyuhkuning. Its famous for its ayam betutu (roast chicken). The nasi campur is very Balinese and very good. A pitstop into Casa Luna for an arak madu (arak, honey, lime) and an apple crumble, cost considerably more than the nasi campurs, but was enjoyable.
Sporting my new shoes, I wanted to get around a bit and give them a workout. Let me backtrack a bit. This morning when taking Jevon down to Cafe Seminyak, we went for a stroll around the parking lot at the supermarket and noticed one place selling knock off Crocs for 50,000rp. Normal prices are 450,000rp-500,000rp and these look exactly the same. I snapped up a pair sized 10 and was off like a dirty shirt.
Jevon is now 2 years old and getting very active. He’s very vocal now and a bit cocky. We decided to let him run off some steam at the Sanur Village Festival, so after a shot down to Jl. Gatut Subroto and around the Bypass, we were pulling over beside the Golden arches and heading down to the beach. Down on the beach giant kites were flying and there was contest to see which flyer could do ticks and and elegantly. More than one giant kite crashed into trees and onto the beach close to us and the kids enjoyed it. Beer was being sold at a beach side tent for 5,000rp a plastic cup which took the edge off for a lot of us. Last time I came down to the festival the food was bloody awful, so we held off with eating there. We did however see the parade which included Balinese dancers with spears, a Barong, Balinese youngsters carried on thrones dressed in regal attire and other great things. A good end to a fun event and a decent Sunday with the family.
