Once in a while you come across something special. A couple of years ago my brother and I discovered Poinciana Resort in NE Bali. Poinciana is owned by Nyoman, a Balinese lady who spent 25 years in Australia. She is a super nice lady and the place she’s built is breath taking.
Driving along the NE coast of Bali you will hit a section that is sparsely populated and trafficked, between Tulamben and Tejakuka. Tourists passing through are going from Amed to Lovina, and locals tend not to go south of Les, Tejukula, Tembok. Poinciana is located on the southern end of that stretch, the property extending down to the black sand beach. Nyoman has outdone herself by building 2 new villas in grand style. The funny thing is after creating such a great place, she is quick to say she knows nothing about the hotel business.
Why would you stay at Poinciana Resort?
•To get away from it all.
•To enjoy a tranquil part of the Bali coast.
•For a romantic getaway.
•To spoil yourself in a lovely setting.
•To access NE Bali using Poinciana as your base.
•To go diving
•As an alternative to staying in a ‘retirement home’ in Nusa Dua.
Seriously, if you are on a road trip to East / North Bali and are looking for a great place to stay, with a restaurant, pool, beach access and some great scenic areas nearby, then try Poinciana. Just down the road is the waterfall in Les and a little further at Bondalem is the turnoff that will take you to Kintamani, a 13km uphill journey through some lovely country, and no other ‘bules‘ in sight. For a cool drive from the NE coast to Ubud, take the Bondalem road up to Kintamani (bring a sweater!) then pass the magnificent temple at Pura Ulun Danu Batur and take the next right turn towards Payangan. Its a virtually straight shot downhill for about 20km, through villages, rice-fields and whole range of local scenes, finishing in Campuhan / Ubud.
Check out Poinciana’s website for continuing updates and stop in there for lunch if you are travelling between Amed and Lovina / Pemuteran / Menjangan.
