Bali and much of the south coast of Indonesia has been pounded by big waves recently, due to a combo of high winds and the lunar cycle. According to Indonesia’s meteorology department, big waves will continue, for a while but with less force than over the last week.
Here’s more from the Jakarta Post.
Interesting that they mention the extended wave length. That was a factor involved in sweeping the 2 people off of the beach the other day, the water just keeps coming. When you look at a surf report you can see the intervals between sets of waves, the longer the interval indicates the wave length. Surfers will be loving it right now and for a newcomer to Bali its super easy to get hooked up with a motorbike and surfboard rack. This gives you access to the western Bukit breaks such as Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Balangan and also the eastern Bukit breaks such as Nusa Dua and Sri Lanka in less than 30 minutes. At this time of year the winds change to create offshore conditions for the western Bukit breaks, which are mostly left handers.
