Sitting here in an internet cafe in Seminyak, a lady just ran in and asked if her cell phone was found. I know that feeling having lost one myself, its not fun and she is in for a few frustrating hours.
Everyone in Bali has a cell phone, that’s how it feels anyway. I’m a moderate user and don’t play with my phone just for fun. Its the convenience of being able to contact people from anywhere I find advantageous. Most of the young people here dream about their next motorbike and cell phone, upgrading from the present one. I know this because I hear people talking about it. For expats like me who are mobile, the cell phone is often pulled out at internet cafes, restaurants, shops etc. Its only a matter of time before one is lost. My phone cost 350,000rp second hand and is still good. Losing it would mean the inconvenience of not having my address book, but the price of the phone is negligable. When someone else finds a cell phone they can switch the SIM card or sell it to a phone shop within an hour. Your chances of getting your phone back are slim and I have zero motivation to buy a fancy phone.
If you come to Bali for an extended trip, you can buy cheap new or used Nokias on the back alleys in Kuta, including across from Jl. Benesari at Jl. Legian. A new one might cost 500,000rp.
