Ngurah Rai airport in Bali is a funky little place. They place a jazzy version of Balinese traditional tunes over the loudspeaker, there are ‘Oleh oleh Bali’ (Bali gift shops) around and the compact, rundown nature of the place somehow fits with Bali’s village type image.
Indonesia has many small domesic airlines, some i have not heard of before. There offices and check in desks seem more like car rental desks than airlines. The recorded female voice over the loudspeaker “Flight 214 to JAKARTA leaving at gate FIFTEEN!!!”
Interesting to observe the middle class Indonesians who are flying out from Bali to other parts of the country. Sitting waiting for my plane I spot the Cempaka Lounge, specially created for card holders of BII, Lippo Bank and others. CitiBank also has its member lounges in many Indonesian airports.
