Aug 2014 – Most of the major renovations of Himeji Castle in Hyōgo Prefecture have been completed revealing the original building’s beautiful brilliant white appearance. While beautiful before, the black coloured highlights were caused by mildew that was making it black! The four year long renovation fully wraps up in spring of 2015 but the wraps are off at last.
Himeji castle is one of Japan’s three most famous castles and is the most visited castle in Japan. Registered as one of the first Japanese World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, it is also known as Shirasagi castle which means “White Heron castle” because of its pure white walls which the Himeji Castle renovations restored.
It has survived while many other Japanese castles were destroyed in the Meiji era and World War II and is the most visited castle in Japan.
