Overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Kyoto, very few tourists go to Shiga Prefecture 滋賀県 in the Kansai region, even though it boasts many historical sites and museums. Furthermore, over 37% of the land is set aside as natural parks, the largest percentage of any prefecture.
Japan’s largest lake, Lake Biwa, provides delicious fish as well as a place for boating and other outdoor sports. Most of the prefecture’s economy is based on agriculture, in particular, rice, tea, and cattle. The population is generally concentrated on the southern side of Lake Biwa in the capital city, Otsu.
The southern part is fairly temperate, but the northern part is mountainous and cold and snowy in the winter. There are quite a few ski resorts as well, such as Biwako Valley and Okuibuki Ski & Snowboard Resort, most with views of Lake Biwa which is amazing.
Hikone Castle is probably the most famous tourist destination within the prefecture, though there are many interesting places and local festivals.
If you have a chance to visit while in Kyoto, Shiga is a great destination for day or overnight trips.
