Nachi Falls 那智滝 (Nachi no Taki) in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, is one of the best-known waterfalls in Japan. This 133 meter tall waterfall boasts one of the longest drops in Japan, with one ton of water cascading down the cliff every second.
The Nachi Taisha Shrine near the base of the falls is dedicated to the 12 kami (spirits) of the waters.
Nearby is a 7th century Tendai sect temple – Seigantoji. The temple is the oldest wooden structure in the area.
An annual Festival of Fire takes place at Nachi Falls in July, when twelve, fifty kilogram burning torches are waved in front of the waters. The Festival of Fire is the highlight at the end of the annual grand festival at the Kumano-Nachi Great Shrine dedicated to these falls. See the video here.
This awe-inspiring and evolving view is truly unforgettable!
