One of the traditional crafts of Kanazawa is yuzen, a dyeing process that uses resists and multiple colors to create one-of-a-kind designs. The Kaga Yuzen Traditional Industries Center 加賀染振興協会 is only a few minutes north of Kenrokuen Park, and makes a good addition to a visit to the city for those interested in textiles and crafts. Though small, it has a good exhibit of kimono and explains the process of making the designs.
Artists are on hand giving live demonstrations, and visitors have a chance to try their hand by making a handkerchief. Reservations are needed and the class costs 1575 yen. In addition, there is the option to try on a kimono and take photos, or even walk outside through the neighborhoods for an hour for an additional fee.
After enjoying the displays, take time to look at the wide variety of hand-made gifts for sale; because they are made by professional local craftsmen, they are not cheap, but are excellent souvenirs of a visit to Kanazawa.
English labeling in minimal, but the displays are clear enough to follow. The Kaga Yuzen Traditional Industries Center costs 300 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary and junior high students. It is open from 9 am to 5:30 pm. It is closed Wednesdays and December 27 to January 4.
Address is 8-8, Kosho-machi, Kanazawa
