Staying in a Japanese ryokan, or private inn, can be an interesting experience. There are many differences from hotels; not only are rooms tatami-style, but the etiquette upon arriving is not the same. For example, you need to remove your shoes at the entrance, and you can wear the provided yukata bathrobe throughout the facilities. Many ryokan discourage foreign visitors, but Kashimaya Ryokan 鹿島屋旅館 in downtown Kanazawa welcomes people from around the world and takes time to educate them on culture and traditions.
Kashimaya Ryokan has been in operation since 1919 and the facilities are older and toilets and bathrooms are shared. Breakfast and dinner are optional but excellent, featuring many Kanazawa specialties.
Kashimaya Ryokan is centrally located, only a three minute walk from Kanazawa Station. Take the East Exit and walk straight, turning right at the pachinko parlor. The ryokan is in the first block on the left side. Because of the shared facilities, guests have an opportunity to meet other visitors from around the world, making it a good choice for the gregarious traveler or families who want to learn more about other cultures. Because of this, it is not ideal for business travelers or those who prefer their privacy.
During the Summer,Yukata (Summer Kimonos) are available for rental so guests can experience a truly authentic stay while they explore Kanazawa.
Address is 2-19-13 Honmachi Kanazawa city, 920-0853
