Friendly service, reasonable rates, comfortable Japanese-style lodging, and luxurious baths makes a stay at the Kiyoshigekan in Kusatsu Onsen a memorable experience. The small family-run facility in Gunma Prefecture, a few hours from Tokyo, has 10 tatami rooms that sleep a maximum of 40 people total, plus an annex with 4 apartments for long-term guests.
The rooms in the main building all include private western-style toilets, but baths are shared by all the guests. They are divided by gender, and there are indoor and outdoor pools. If you prefer your privacy, it is possible to use the bath by yourself between 9 pm and 8 am by placing an “occupied” sign on the door. There are also smaller, indoor bathing facilities with locks.
Meals are served in a common dining room; they are Japanese-style with a set menu which changes based on available ingredients. Dinner is at 6 pm and breakfast is 8 am.
Free Wi-Fi internet access is available in the rooms and lobby of the main building.
Kiyoshigekan is about a 10 minute walk from the bus station, and also from the downtown area of Kusatsu Onsen. Though it is not as centrally located, the welcoming atmosphere and reasonable rates make it a good choice for a foreign visitor to the town. It is a 15 minute walk from Sainokawara Park and a 10-minute drive from Kusatsu International Ski Centre.
This video with a female guest is a great tour of Kiyoshigekan and is subtitled in English, enjoy!
