Katsudon, or a breaded pork cutlet served on rice, is a favorite dish in Japan. In Okayama, it takes a slightly different taste with the addition of a dark and thick demi-glace sauce and is called demi-katsudon. The Ajitsukasa Nomura Restaurant in Heiwa-cho near Okayama Station offers one of the best in the city. As well as the cutlet, rice, and sauce, it is served with some steamed cabbage and a bowl of miso soup. At about 1000 yen per plate, it makes a hearty and delicious meal.
The demi-katsudon has rice on the bottom, followed by a bit of steamed cabbage followed by the katsu (pork cutlet) and finally the demigloss sauce is poured over it and topped with a few peas.
Ajitsukasa Nomura is open from 11 am to 2:30 pm and 5 to 9 pm. It is closed Sundays and is located just off Momotaro-odori Street near the Nishikawa Ryokudokoen Tram Station.
