For a good introduction to Okinawan culture from the early periods to Ryukyu Kingdom on to the US occupation after WWII, be sure to visit the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum 沖縄県立博物館・美術館. The two museums share a lobby in the stunning, modern white limestone building, which was completed in 2007.
The art museum focuses on works by Okinawan artists, or others that relate to the prefecture in some way. The Okinawa Prefectural Museum has an extensive collection of works related to both history and natural history.
Start with the general wing, then explore the side gallery as time permits. If time is limited, follow the suggested course in the flier that comes with your ticket to see the main highlights.
Be sure to visit the outdoor space in back which has a reproduction Ryukyu house. The museums appeal to all ages, there are interactive areas for children to learn in a fun environment.
The Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum are open from 9 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Thursday and Sundays. They are open until 8 pm on Friday and Saturday. They are closed on Mondays unless it is a national holiday, in which case they will close the following Tuesday.
Wheelchairs and strollers are available at the information desk. Entrance for adults is 400 yen for the history museum and 300 yen for the art museum. High school and college students are 250 yen and 200 yen respectively, and elementary and junior high students are 150 yen and 100 yen. The museums are a 10 minute walk from the Okinawa Monorail Omoromachi Station.
