The shopping center at the heart of Naha is Kokusai-dori 国際通り, or International Street. The 1.6 kilometer (about 1 mile) street is packed with stores, restaurants, hotels, and bars. Many feature traditional Okinawan products, but you can find items from all over the world. Be sure to visit the arcades which branch off from Kokusai-dori, because they have an abundance of small stalls overflowing with fresh fish, meats, fruits, and gift items.
Just off Kokusai-dori is an area that was once the center of the pottery industry, so you can find many shops carrying traditional, rustic Okinawan ceramics. Kokusai-dori is a great place to find souvenirs and have a meal. A popular dining choice is one of the many restaurants that feature traditional Okinawan live music and dancing along with the meal.
Kokusai-dori is a popular area, and many restaurants and bars are open late, creating a thriving night live. Single male travelers should be warned that some bars prohibit foreign men from entering without a woman, due to previous trouble associated with some of the military bases.
When visiting the area, use common sense about concealing valuables and similar precautions for being in large crowds, especially if you plan to visit after dark.
