Located next to a busy port, with a highway overpass crossing the water, critics claim that Naminoue Beach 波の上浜 in Okinawa is pathetic and not worth visiting. However, the water and beach are clean. The location, just a few minutes’ walk from Kokusai-dori in downtown Naha, makes it an easily accessible park for a barbeque, swim, or just relaxing on the sand.
It definitely does not have the legendary beauty of Okinawan beaches, but can be squeezed into a short visit to Naha. The view of Namanoue Shrine on a rocky bluff above the beach is very picturesque and adds to the exotic atmosphere.
The nearest public transportation is the Kume Yubinkyoku-mae stop of the Naha city bus. It is open from 9 am to 6 pm, throughout the year, and to 7 pm in July and August. It is free to visit the beach, and there are shops nearby where you can pick up a bento lunch. Rent a beach chair for 500 yen or a sun parasol for 1500 yen. The calm water makes this a nice place for a family picnic without a long drive from Naha.
