Mention the name “Narita” and most people think of the international airport just outside of Tokyo. Actually, there is also a thriving town in Chiba Prefecture with many attractions of interest. Because Narita City is so close to the airport itself, people on a tight schedule can still enjoy a taste of Japan.
Narita Station is located about an hour from downtown Tokyo by train, and is one stop away from the airport. The main historical destination is Naritasan Shinsho-ji, a Shingon Buddhist temple with a history about 1000 years old and a lovely park on the grounds.
Narita City also has several museums such as the Museum of History, the Museum of Aeronautics, Naritasan Calligraphy Museum, and Boso no Mura, an outdoor museum recreating much of the past of the region. Aside from varied attractions, you can enjoy excellent restaurants or visit Aeon Mall, which contains hundreds of stores for all your shopping needs.
