The oldest building standing in Sapporo, Hokkaido, the Sapporo Clock Tower (札幌時計台 Sapporo Tokeidai) was once the drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College, now Hokkaido University. The simple, white wooden building evokes the feel of the American Midwest, and the clock still chimes every hour. It was built in 1878 to house laboratories, lecture rooms, and a space for physical training. Today it houses a museum about the history of Sapporo Agricultural College and the development of the city. The upstairs room is available for rent, and sometimes concerts are held there.
The Sapporo Clock Tower is a photogenic addition to many tours of the city. It is open from 8:45 am to 5:10 pm with a last admission at 5 pm. It is closed on Mondays, and also on the following Tuesday when Monday is a national holiday. It is also closed December 29 through January 3. Admission is 200 yen for adults or free for children younger than junior high school age.
The Sapporo Clock Tower is located 4 blocks south of Sapporo Station, 1 block north of Odori Park.
