For a unique introduction to foreign influences in Japan, visit the Oyamazaki Museum close to Kyoto and Osaka, owned and operated by the Asahi Beer Company. The collection contains over 1,000 excellent examples of mingei, or Japanese folk crafts, which are displayed on a rotating basis. Most of the pieces are pottery, though there are also textiles and paintings. There is also an exhibit of orchid watercolors in the conservatory.

The building is built on the hillside of Mt. Tenno (Tennozan) and itself is just as important as the artworks it contains. Designed by the original owner, wealthy businessman Shotaro Kaga (1888-1954), it reflects his interest in an eclectic blend of Tudor Gothic with Asian influences. It is a fine example of the British Crafts Movement adapted to Japanese tastes. The villa was constructed from 1912-1932, and was almost destroyed after his death. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1996.

The annex, designed by Tadao Ando, is referred to as an “underground jewel box.” It contains important paintings from the Asahi collection, including multiple water lily paintings by Monet, a Picasso, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Degas, and more.

The grounds are also pleasant for a stroll, again combining both Western and Japanese tastes. There are some sculptures and even a folly; the cherry blossoms are especially beautiful in the spring.

Oyamazaki Villa is wheelchair accessible, and there are coin lockers to stow belongings. There is a small café that serves beverages and cakes, but no meals. The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. It is closed on Tuesdays instead of Monday if a Monday is a national holiday. There are some random closures when setting up new exhibits. Entrance is 900 yen for adults, 500 yen for high school and college students, and free for junior high and younger.

The Oyamazaki Villa Museum is about 10 minutes from either the JR Yamazaki Station (on the JR Kyoto line), or the Hankyu Oyamazaki Station (on the Hankyu Kyoto Line). There is a free shuttle bus that runs about 3 times an hour from both of the stations.
