There are few hotels that openly welcome western guests in Kamakura, so Hotel New Kamakura is a reasonable choice if you plan to stay. The 80-year old establishment has vintage fixtures in the old wing, and a new wing with more modern features. Critics claim that it may be time for an update and a good cleaning, but fans rave about the picturesque charm which has been featured in many television shows. Many famous figures from the Taisho Period stayed there, including Ryunsuke Akutagawa, who wrote the famous short story Rashomon. The hotel is now designated an Important Historic Site of Kamakura.
There are both Japanese and western style rooms. Those in the old wing have shared toilets. Rooms come with the usual Japanese hotel amenities, such as soap and shampoo, television, yukata robe, tea, and a kettle for boiling water. The price is very competitive, with discounts for children and guests who stay over 4 days.
The location is excellent, just a one-minute walk from the JR Kamakura Station West Exit and also one minute from the Enoden Kamakura West Exit. For more information: http://www.newkamakura.com/index_en.asp
