Hachiman is a popular Shinto deity, the enshrined form of the Emperor Ojin, called the guardian of the Minamoto, or Genji, clan. He is frequently associated with war or military success. One of the main shrines dedicated to the god is located in Kamakura City, Kanagawa. Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu was originally founded by Yoriyoshi Minamoto in 1063 in thanks for success in battle. It was moved to its present location and enlarged by his descendent, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, Yoritomo Minamoto. It was used not only as a religious center, but also for political activities.
The present Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is a large complex with a beautiful approach from the main street up a hill to the main shrine building, which dates back to 1828. There are 8 lesser shrines dedicated to different deities spread throughout the grounds, as well as an important gate and worship halls.
Enjoy sitting by the lake or enjoy the peony garden in the fall and winter. The shrine is free to visit, and the grounds are open from 5 am to 9 pm from April to September, and from 6 am to 9 pm from October through March.
Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is about a 10 minute walk from Kamakura Station.
