In 1887 a brewing company named Yebisu Beer was founded that specialized in German brewing methods. The name of the beer later became the name of the train station and the name of the town Tokyo neighborhood of Ebisu. The pronunciations of both “Yebisu” and “Ebisu” are the same.
To mark the 120th birthday , the Museum of Yebisu Beer was opened in Ebisu. Inside the museum you will find a gallery of photographs and antique signage that documents the rise of Yebisu, and beer in general.
You can enjoy various types of Yebisu beer at the Tasting Salon. Yebisu comes in two main varieties: Yebisu (Premium), a Dortmunder/export lager and Yebisu Black, a Euro dark lager. As with most beer companies there are also special edition varieties that are limited in distribution area and time. Now owned by the beer company Sapporo, Yebisu is positioned as Sapporo’s “luxury” beer label .
There is also a museum shop with rare items only available here that make great souvenir gifts.
The museum is inside Yebisu Garden Place, behind the Mitsukoshi department store.
