Nikko is a small town in the mountains in Tochigi Prefecture close to Tokyo. The name Nikko (日光市) Nikkō-shi, literally means “sunlight”. Nikko is a very popular tourist destination, most famous is the Toshogu Shrine, burial site of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.

A waterfall in Yukawa, Nikko
The river of Yukawa runs for 12.4 km close to Nikko in the Tochigo Prefecture. The river starts at the Yutaki waterfall, which is located on the south of Lake Yunoko. Then it passes Ryuzu waterfall, and becomes river of Jigoku. Finally, it flows into the shore of Shobugahama of Lake Chuzenji. Fly-fishing in the untouched natural flow of the river is a popular activity on the Yukawa.

The area of Lake Chuzenji, around Mt. Nantai and Yumoto are called Oku-Nikko (Inner Nikko), but some people call it just Yumoto area. Border between Nikko and Oku-Nikko is Byoubuiwa screen on the Irohazaka road.
Brief history: History of Oku-Nikko began when Priest Shoto succeeded in climbing Mt. Nantai in Nara-Heian period. Nikko developed as a training area for ascetics until Edo period, and developed as a resort area from Meiji era. Weather of Oku-Nikko is relatively cold, but it pleasant in the summer.

Futarasan Shrine @ Lake Chuzenji
Priest Shoto established Shihonryuji Temple on the north side of river of Daiya more than 1200 years ago as well as the Hongu Shrine in 790. This area is the birthplace of Futarasan Shrine. Shoto trained himself strictly and succeeded to climb up to Mt. Nantai. He made a small shrine on the top of Mt. Nantai in 782. This is Oku-miya Shrine. 2 years later, Priest Shoto built Chugushi Shrine on the north side of Lake Chuzenji. The Futarasan Shrine is one of the best shrines of Shimotsuke (former Tochigi prefecture) for a long time.
