The Kosugi Hoan Museum of Art in Nikko was opened in 1997. The basic theme is “Affection for the Nature.” Main exhibition is of Hoan Kosugi’s exhibition of his works including Japanese paintings, oil paintings, and watercolor paintings as well as rough sketches of animals and plants that constituted the base for those works. The serene museum is a beautiful architectural design with a flowing water garden on the roof. Interior is well lit showcasing the works of art. Take a break and enjoy the lovely cafe inside and then browse the gift shop for souvenirs of your visit.
Hoan was born in the Shinto priest family in Nikko city. He became a follower of an Western painter, Bunsai Ioki and afterwards painted exceptional works in other various fields as well.
He won the best prize twice in the Art Exhibition held by Ministry of Education. Masterpieces of his work are “Izumi” (Fountain), “Suigou” (Riverside district), “Yamasachihiko” (Roughly means God in a myth), “Shinkyo” (Sacred Bridge), “Okuno-hosomichi-gasaku” (Collection of paintings regarding “Narrow path to the North”) Hoan’s pen name “Misei” is on those works.

From the Nikko station of the Tobu Private Line or JR Nikko station, take a Tobu bus for Kiyotaki/Hosoo or Chuzenji/Yumoto or a Kanto bus for Nishisando (Toshogu) and get off at the Shinkyo Bridge stop (a 5-minute ride) and walk for about 3 minutes.
From the Shinkyo Bridge stop, go across the pedestrian crossing right in front of you to the opposite side of the road.
Look up to the right direction while standing on the Nikkobashi Bridge located over the Daiyagawa River parallel with the Shinkyo Bridge and you will see a light-brown building which is the Kosugi Hoan Museum of Art.

Admission is Adults 700 Yen, University/College Students 500 Yen and High School Students and under are free.
