At the center of Miyajima, Mt. Misen creates a beautiful backdrop for Itsukushima Shrine and the Otorii. However, it also is considered a spiritual center which boasts seven sites of wonder, as well as having beautiful untouched forests and magnificent rock formations. The 360 degree view from the top of the Inland Sea and islands is remarkably beautiful, especially on a clear day.
In 806, Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, went to Mt. Misen for part of his ascetic training. The sites of wonder are related to his stay on the mountain, and include such things as a mandala rock with an inscription that he wrote. There is a plum tree which rooted from his staff, and an eternal fire which has not gone out in the 1200 years since he used it for part of his religious training. It is said that water boiled over the fire can cure many diseases. The fire was the source of the flame for the Peace Park Memorial Flame in Hiroshima.
Mt. Misen is covered with hiking trails sure to please the outdoor enthusiast. The peak stands 535 meters tall (about 1755 feet), so many people prefer to take one of the cable cars that runs frequently.
Consider taking the cable to the car and hiking back to the bottom. The weather can be changeable, so bring layers of clothing and be aware that there are poisonous snakes and bees. For more information: http://www.miyajima.or.jp/english/spot/spot_misen.html
