Daisetsuzan is the largest national park in Japan, covering an area greater than many of its smaller prefectures. It is located in the heart of Hokkaido, and includes a chain of mountains, the tallest of which is Mount Ashi at 2,291 meters (over 7,500 feet).
The area is known in Ainu as kamuimintara, which translates as “God’s playground.” It is a fitting appellation for the huge expanses of unspoiled wilderness. There are dense forests, gorges, swamps, lakes, and year-round snowy areas.
The alpine flowers in Daisetsuzan National Park are beautiful in the spring, and the fall colors are considered some of the most beautiful in Japan. Some of the wildlife is only found in the region, and some of the more notable species are brown bear, Ezo deer, and Japanese pika.
Access by public transportation is limited and does not run often, so a rental car is highly recommended. The area is so vast there are many entry points, but the most common is from Hokkaido’s second largest city, Asahikawa, which is to the northwest of the park. Rental cars are available at the Asahikawa airport.
Consider staying at one of the onsens, such as Asahidake Onsen, as a base for exploring the Daisetsuzan National Park area. Though not a common tourist destination for those from overseas, Daisetsuzan National Park is a treasure enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, and photographers.
