From a Mardi Gras-style festival to scary zombies, Universal Studios Japan has something to please everyone this Halloween. The special events are held from September 13 through November 10, 2013. There is also a changing room and locker space so visitors can don a costume and add to the festivities. Lockers for your street clothes cost 300 yen.
The entire park is decked out with cute pumpkins and Universal characters like Snoopy and the Sesame Street friends in costumes. One of the highlight events is the Parade de Carnival, evoking the color and fun of the holiday from all over the world. Music, dancing and wild costumes fill the parade in a 40 minute show which is performed once per day.
This video of the parade which was filmed on September 16, 2013 of the parade by MOPPY LUCKY is a fun watch.
The parade stops at many points along the route and performers throw bead necklaces to the waiting crowds. There is a special children’s seating area for youngsters, but arrive early because it can fill up quickly.
For those wanting more of a thrill, visit on a Friday through Monday during the event period, or Halloween itself, which is Thursday, October 31. During the evening the streets of Universal Studios are filled with ghoulish zombies. Many of the rides are altered to have a Halloween theme inspired by Sadoko, a character from Japanese horror. These ridea are Space Fantasy, Jaws, Backdraft, Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2 3D. There is also a Mummy Museum and an area dedicated to Jason from “Friday the 13th.” Though the evening features horror attractions, there are some “safe” areas which are not scary for younger family members or those wanting a break.
Don’t forget to check out the gift shops, which have seasonal goods such as charms showing characters in their Halloween costumes. Universal Surprise Halloween is a fun way to celebrate the holiday. For more information: http://www.usj.co.jp/e/halloween2013/
