Happoen means literally “The Garden of Eight Views.” The Happoen Garden (八芳園) is a traditional, privately-owned garden which offers many services to make it convenient for visitors wishing to experience Japanese culture.
You can enjoy free time in the beautiful garden, or register for a tour explaining some of the features. There is also a tea house where guests can enjoy traditional matcha tea and sweets. By registering ahead, you can participate in a tea ceremony and learn about the different tools and etiquette involved. Two restaurants have lovely garden views and are good choices for lunch or dinner, as they are open until 10 pm. Hours may vary, so confirm before going.
The garden is popular for both Shinto and western-style weddings, and there are extensive banquet facilities for wedding parties and other groups.
The largest of the fifteen halls seats up to 800 people, so sometimes Happoen can be quite bustling, without the quiet meditation feeling that you might expect from a Japanese garden.

Getting there: Happoen Garden is closest to the Shirokanedai Station, which serves the Toei Mita and Tokyo Metro Namboku lines. It is about a one minute walk straight ahead after leaving Exit #2.
