Shinobazu Pond takes up a large part of the southwest side of Ueno Park. Originally natural, it has been modified several times over the years so that there are now three pond sections divided by wide paths. The boat pond has rental paddle boats, including ones shaped like swans.
The cormorant pond hosts a huge number of wild birds, being one of the largest animal sanctuaries in the middle of the Tokyo metropolitan area. The lotus pond is especially spectacular in summer when the flowers are in full bloom and the pnd is almost invisible under the leaves.
Where the paths meet in the middle of the pond is a temple to Benten, the goddess of arts and knowledge. There has been a temple there for many centuries, though the present octagonal building was erected after the air raids of WWII destroyed the former building. Brightly colored, it is very photogenic as it reflects in the water of the pond. Inside are several beautiful paintings of cultural importance.
On the approach to the Benten Temple, there are dozens of stalls selling various foods, so this makes a great place to rest and have a snack or lunch.
