It is hard to believe there is a beautiful zoo with over 460 species of animals located in the center of the Tokyo metropolis. However, Japan’s oldest zoo, founded in 1882, is attached to the Ueno Park area just a few minute’s walk from Ueno Station.
The most famous attraction is the panda exhibit, and there are long lines waiting to see it. The panda’s are so popular in the area you will see signs and panda themed attractions everywhere in the ueno zoo and the surrounding area. There are many other rare or endangered species, and the zoo has been making an effort to built more realistic, habitat-like homes for them. Along with the more exotic animals, there is a petting zoo for children with common domestic animals. The zoo also contributes to wildlife conservation through its bird sanctuary in Shinobazu Pond.
Because Ueno Zoo is widespread, it is split into two zones, East and West. There is a monorail to serve as a connection between the two areas which kids love.
The zoo is open 9:30 am to 5 pm, but is closed on Mondays. If there is a national holiday on Monday, the park is closed on Tuesday instead.
