Akihabara Electric Town is a section of Tokyo with a vast array of electronic appliances and devices. Shops range from high-tech stores with the latest products to resale stores piled high with parts. In recent years it has also become a mecca for people who enjoy anime and manga, or Japanese cartoons and comics. The neon and lights and displays are quite amazing to see, even if you are not interested in buying anything.
If you are considering buying electronics, it is good to check if the device is compatible with overseas electricity requirements. Also be aware that the warranty may not be valid if the product is taken out of Japan. Larger purchases may also qualify as duty-free. Be sure to keep your receipts for passing customs on your way home. Fortunately many of the larger stores have sales staff able to communicate in English to discuss your needs.
Getting there: Akihabara is served by the Akihabara JR station, with the Keihin-Tohoku, Chuo, Sobu, and Yamanote lines. It is also connected to the Tokyo Metro Hibiya line. Exit from the gate marked “Akihabara Electric Town.”
