San Francisco area of USJ lies between the New York and Jurassic Park theme areas. It has two attractions, the Back to the Future ride and the Backdraft show. The area does not have the coherence of some of the others in the park, but the attractions are a fun touch of nostalgia for those who enjoyed the movies they are based on.
There are two restaurants in the San Francisco theme area. The Dragon’s Pearl can be found in Chinatown, and presents a Japanese view of a Chinese restaurant in the United States. There is plenty of lacquered wood and oriental designs, and the menu features ramen and things that go with it, such as spring rolls and fried rice. The other restaurant clearly caters to children, starting with the Happiness Cafe name and the exterior adorned with a giant Coke bottle and bubbles, and continuing to the menu. Items include curry with chicken or hamburger and rice formed into fanciful shapes like stars, hearts, and clovers. In Japan, curry is mild and often served in school lunches.
San Francisco Candies is a shop featuring Sesame Street goods. It is housed in a red brick building with characters on the awnings. The Back to the Future Gifts is a glass structure with towers in front of the ride with the same name. As one might guess, the theme is gifts related to the ride and movie. The other important place to note is an information center near the Dragon’s Pearl.
