Universal Studios Japan is a fun place for the whole family. When taking young children, it is good to plan ahead to make the visit more pleasant for everyone.
First, many of the rides have height restrictions, usually 102 cm (about 40 inches) when riding with a guardian or 122 cm (about 48 inches) without. Check before you go so that no one is disappointed. Because these rides are the popular, fast ones with long lines, you may not need the Express Pass if you plan to skip them.
There is a Child Switch plan for two people to take a ride that a child will not be boarding. When you get to the front of the line, one person rides while the other waits with the child. When the first person returns, the second can go without waiting in line again. This is a good opportunity for the adults, but the child might get bored while waiting, so use this option with discretion.
The park has multiple theme areas. Universal Wonderland was designed especially for the smallest family members. There are simple, carnival-style rides that do not have scary special effects. There are multiple areas for free play and experimentation. The activities are fun, with colorful, cheerful decor featuring favorite characters from Sesame Street, Snoopy, and Hello Kitty. Despite the frivolous appearance, the attractions are constructed for children to learn about things like the qualities of water, teamwork, and cause-and-effect while playing. Children as young as 3 years old can comfortably enjoy the attractions in Universal Wonderland, and parents are invited to stay close, watch, and encourage their children.
Because many attractions involve water, your child can become quite wet. Bring extra clothes or a towel to dry off, keeping everyone happy. It is good to have extra layers in case the weather changes, too. There are coin lockers if you do not want to carry around extra luggage during the day.
Outside food is not supposed to be brought into the park, but you might want to consider some small snacks, especially for when waiting in line. You may want to consider eating at a restaurant as well, because this gives everyone a good break to sit and recharge. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids in hot weather.
Universal Studios has many services to help care for your children. Strollers can be rented for ¥1000 per day. Bathrooms have diaper changing areas, and there is a family service center where mothers can comfortably nurse. It has such things as sinks, changing tables, and hot water for mixing formula. Baby food can be purchased at Snoopy’s Backlot Cafe. There is also a lost child center in Hollywood. Take time to teach your child what to do in case you are separated in a crowd!
With some preparation to avoid problems before they happen, your visit can be fun and memorable.
