UNIVERSAL STUDIO JAPAN

UNIVERSAL STUDIO JAPAN

Universal Studios Japan is a theme park designed around the movies produced by the studio. There are 7 theme areas arranged in a rough circle around a central lake. Hollywood is the first area you see at the entrance, with a 1950’s retro feel. It has most of the shops, shows, and restaurants in the park. Going clockwise you will then see New York and San Francisco.

Leaving the city theme, you then enter several areas focusing on famous movies: Jurassic Park, WaterWorld, and Amity Village, home of JAWS. The final area is Universal Wonderland, which has simple rides and activities for young family members. It has three sections based on Snoopy, Hello Kitty, and Sesame Street. All of the areas have bathrooms, and larger ones have gift shops, cafes or restaurants, and other guest facilities.

The rides range from simple, carnival-style options to high-tech roller coasters. Be aware that many have a minimum height restriction, so confirm before waiting in line. There are two live performance shows, Universal Monsters Live Rock and Roll Show and WaterWorld, and multiple movies with effects such as 3D and moving seats. The live shows are spectacular and worth watching although they are announced in Japanese, but you might not follow all of the plot in the movies if you do not know the language. Take time to plan your trip so you see attractions that are appropriate for your whole family.

Popular bands perform at Universal Studies Japan and the likelihood of catching one is limited and are very popular so hard to view. One group, Girls`Generation  少女時代 performed LOVE&GIRLS in June 2013. This video received over a million views in just over a month! Girls’s Generation website is http://www.girls-generation.jp/

Many of the rides involve water, so bring along a towel or a change of clothes. Be prepared for this and avoid wearing anything that might get damaged by splashes. There are coin lockers near the entrance to store anything you do not want to carry with you.

Every evening, weather permitting, there is a spectacular parade called the Magical Starlight Parade. This is a fun show with live dancers, good music, and floats covered with thousands of tiny lights in rainbow colors. Try to make time to see the parade if you are visiting the park, it is highly recommended.

When you enter, be sure to pick up a map in English. Some staff members speak the language, but do not count on it. If you do not get a map with your ticket, go to an information booth or guest services. You can also find out more on the official English website:  http://www.usj.co.jp/e/
