Many traditional Japanese inns do not want to deal with foreigners who do not understand the etiquette, but that is not the case with the Ryokan Shimizu. The energetic, English-speaking staff are happy to explain about traditions and make suggestions about places to see and things to do. There is even a free calligraphy lesson in the common room in the evening.

A couple of fun videos aired on Fuji TV where a tv host visited the Ryokan and goofed around a bit. Mainly in Japanese but you can get a good sense of the humour of the inn keepers.

The inn is only a short walk from Kyoto Station on a quiet back street. It is clean and has 12 small but comfortable tatami-floored rooms with private, western-style toilet and shower. There are two large bathing rooms shared by guests who want to experience a traditional Japanese bath. If you have problem getting up and down, or sitting and sleeping on the floor, a Japanese-style room may not be a good choice for you. However, families are welcome, and infants or toddlers will find the tatami a great place to play and sleep.

The room rates are ¥5,000 per person, but higher in peak times. Wi-fi internet access is available at guest rooms and breakfast is available ¥1,050, but must be ordered by 9PM on the previous evening.

The inn is closed from 10 am to 3 pm for cleaning, but if you make arrangements in advance, it is usually possible to enter during that time. The highly-recommended Ryokan Shimizu is that it is often completely booked for months in advance, so reservations can be hard to get. For more information: http://www.kyoto-shimizu.net/
