At the time it was built, the Tempozan Ferris Wheel in Osaka was the largest and most technologically advanced Ferris wheel in the world, though subsequently the London Eye has usurped that claim. With a diameter of 100 meters (330 feet) and a maximum height of 112.5 meters (369 feet), passengers are treated to a spectacular view of Osaka Bay, the city, and surrounding mountains. On clear days it is possible to see Akashi Bridge connecting Shikoku to the main island of Honshu, and the Rokko Mountains in the north.
The view of Osaka city lights is also beautiful at night, making the Tempozan Ferris Wheel a popular spot for dates. The wheel itself has a light display and a weather forecast system. If the colors are orange, it should be sunny, green means cloudy, and blue means rain.
The ride lasts 17 minutes and costs ¥700 for passengers 3 years old and over. There are 60 cars which hold 8 passengers each, and several are barrier-free. The usual hours of operation are 10 am to 10 pm. It is only a few minutes walk from the Osakako Station of the Osaka Municipal Subway Chuo Line and is the same area as the Kaiyukan Aquarium.
