Gion is a traditional district of Kyoto in front of Yasaka Shrine. Over time it evolved into an exclusive entertainment district, but was originally just a place serving the needs of visitors to the shrine. There are now beautifully preserved sections of wooden merchant houses and tea shops, particularly around Shijo-dori. If you walk around in the evening, you may be lucky enough to see a geisha or maiko on her way to work.
Another beautiful area for a walk is along Shirakawa River, a pedestrian area lined with cherry trees and pretty little bridges. In the spring, the trees are lit up at night, and the white clouds of blossoms over the water create and enchanting, romantic setting not to be missed. During this time there are many special events, including a geisha performance which is open to the public.
Now there are also many modern entertainment options such as nightclubs, bars, and pachinko parlors. Some of the older and more exclusive tea houses do not permit visitors. However, if you want a look into traditional Kyoto, there are restaurants in the area that cater to all price ranges; if there is a menu out front, then you should be welcome. Consider one with a river view for a memorable evening.
