Visitors are allowed to take a self-guided tour through this functional brewery which has shaded gardens and a restaurant attached. At the back of the restaurant there are windows overlooking the area where beer is also brewed, though critics suggest that the sake is much better. There is also a gallery dedicated to the Kappa, a mythological and mischievous creature who lends the brewery its name. According to the sake website “Fushi-Mizu: Fushimi’s quality ground water, is best suited to the brewing of sake, bringing out the full flavor of rice and creating high quality sake with a smooth texture. Kyoto’s climate, known particularly for its bitter cold winters called “So-Ko-Bi-E”, is ideal for brewing sake with a profound taste”.
Kizakura Kappa is only a few minutes’ walk from the Keihan Line Chushojima Station. Admission is free, and hours are Monday through Friday 11:30 am to 2 pm, and 5 pm to 9:30 pm. Saturdays and Sundays the facilities are open from 11 am to 10 pm. The restaurant does not have an English menu, but there are photographs to assist with ordering.
