In the heart of Gion is a shrine visited by geisha and maiko called Yasaka Jinja. It is popular year-round among locals seeking protection against disease and prosperity in business. Along with the main shrine dedicated to Gozu Tenno, the god of disease prevention, there are multiple smaller buildings housing the focus objects of other deities. Set in a grove of giant old trees, the shrine is a cool reprieve from the shopping area of Shijo-dori bustling right outside its gate.
Any time of the year there are stalls with food vendors and fortunetellers. However, Yasaka Jinja is most active in July during the Gion Matsuri and at New Year when people make the traditional first shrine visit of the year.
Yasaka Jinja is located on the east end of the Shijo-dori shopping area. It can be reached by Kyoto city buses 46, 201,203, 206, and 207. For more information: http://www.kyoto.travel/2009/11/yasaka-jinja-shrine.html
