Yokohama’s most famous tourist spot is Chinatown, with over 250 shops all concentrated in a central area near the waterfront. Its most famous landmarks are the very intricate, ornamented gates leading into that section of the city.
In 1859, Yokohama opened to foreign trade. It was one of the first cities to do so, with a large influx of Chinese immigrants bringing their own culture with them. However, foreign residents were restricted to living in certain areas, so formed a very tight community within it.
Today Yokohama’s Chinatown the largest in Asia and one of the largest in the world. It has a huge variety of Chinese-themed stores and restaurants. The most popular food is ramen, a type of noodle served in broth, with dozens of variations.
The Official Chinatown website has little information in English, but does have a map: http://www.chinatown.or.jp/e
Getting there: From JR Yokohama Station, take the Minato Mirai line to Motomachi-Chukagei Station. Chinatown covers many city blocks in the area around that station.
